A Brush with Kindness
A Brush with Kindness (ABWK) is a program that assists low-income families in repairing and renovating their homes so they can continue to live in their home safely. ABWK focuses on assisting the elderly, veterans, and those with limited mobility.
A Brush with Kindness projects include accessibility modifications like ramps, grab bars, and bathroom renovations to provide accessible toilets and a walk-in shower unit. The program also provides critical home repair services that will increase the safety and security of the home allowing residents to continue to age in place. Examples include replacing a roof, windows, or deck.
Informational Brochure is available here.
How does the program work?
- Habitat selects partner families based on income, need, and willingness to partner.
- Habitat affiliates use licensed and insured contractors to complete the work.
- On occasion donated materials may be used to keep costs low.
- A no-interest 3-5 year loan is provided to the homeowner to cover the cost of the project and allow for affordable monthly payments. On occasion a sponsor may help subsidize the overall loan amount.
- This program is limited to residents of Hartford & Tolland County and prioritizes homeowners over the age of 65, veterans, and/or those with limited mobility.
Why does Habitat for Humanity offer these exterior maintenance services?
- Families who live in safe and well-maintained homes have better health and stability.
- Home improvements help revitalize neighborhoods and inspire others to maintain their property.
- Affordable housing inventory is preserved and our most vulnerable are allowed to age in place with dignity.
